This is a regular column inside the Mathematical Association of America's web site which explores maths in the world around us.

Noise (New Outlooks In Science and Engineering)
A general science web site which aims to "bring science to life". There is a dedicated maths section which contains many fascinating articles on how maths affects our daily lives.

Making the modern world
A companion site to the permanent exhibition at the Science Museum in London. The maths learning modules explore the maths in space and gravity, and in construction of bridges.

NASA for students
This is one small part of the huge NASA web site. Here you can explore the maths and science behind all aspects of space and space exploration.

The Mathematical Association: what use is it?
This is a great list of resources covering all areas of maths. It includes accounts of how maths is useful in various areas, such as aviation and telecommunications, as well as worksheets on a variety of topics.

The society for underwater technology
As the career pages of the society for underwater technology show, maths is an essential tool when it comes to exploring the oceans.

Mathematical Moments
The American Mathematical Society's Mathematical Moments programme promotes the understanding of the roles maths plays in science, nature, technology and human culture. The website has a series of downloadable brochures for use as teaching resources.

This website describes mathematicians' roles in working life and lists resources for teachers and careers advisers.

Other subjects benefit from a more obvious image of what a job in that area would be like - chemists wear white coats and work in labs, engineers build things, doctors heal people. While many of these are not terribly representative of the full range of work in these professions, at least most students have some image of what chemists, doctors and engineers do.
