There are lots of famous equations in mathematics – and many of them have made a big impact on the world in which we live.

In our new competition we want you to make a poster aimed at showcasing one of these famous equations.  We want your posters to be eye catching and informative and to focus on one famous equation, rather than listing lots of different equations.  We think this will have more impact!

We don’t want to suggest which equation to pick – if you are unsure then do some research on the internet and choose your favourite.

Poster Guidance

To get you started you can view a larger version of the image above, to give you an idea of the things you could include on your poster.

Poster instructions/criteria:

  • Your poster should focus on one famous mathematical equation.
  • Your poster should be aimed at showing how beautiful/interesting/useful your chosen equation is.
  • Your poster should explain what the different symbols in your equation mean, and it should explain what the equation represents.
  • Some equations are very complicated, whereas others are very simple. Either option could win the competition – it depends on the quality of the poster, not how complicated your equation is.
  • It sounds obvious, but your poster should be a poster – i.e. it doesn’t need to contain lots and lots of words, it needs to be visually eye catching and should give out a strong message.
  • You can draw your poster by hand; use a computer; or a mixture of both.
  • Your poster must be A4 size
  • Paper entries – Please mark your name, school year, and school clearly on the back of your entry. Please do not staple or glue items on to your work as posters are scanned for judging.
  • Online entries – Please ensure that the email address you provide is valid and that you choose the correct year group.
