The University of Greenwich provides the opportunity to study a variety of 3-year Mathematics degrees.  These are BSc Mathematics (the most popular choice), BSc Financial Mathematics (appropriate for those planning careers in investment banking and other finance related roles), BSc Statistics and Operational Research (for those with an interest in statistics and management science), BSc Mathematics and Computing (for those wanting to develop more on the programming and networking side) and BSc Mathematics with Business or Economics (for those who are wanting to do fewer maths modules and gain more of an understanding into the world of commerce).  Details of all of these programmes and their respective entry requirements can be found on the University website and on UCAS.

It is also possible to take a four-year MMath Mathematics combining an ordinary standard mathematics degree with Master’s level study.   All of these degrees (with the exception of BSc Mathematics and Computing) are accredited by the IMA.

A year in industry (sandwich placement) can be taken before the final year on any of the above degree programmes.   However, students who prefer to take a shorter placement can do this within their final year by taking a credit-bearing module involving working in a school or industry during term time.  The school-based placement, the Undergraduate Ambassador Scheme, is particularly useful for those students wanting to take up a career as a maths teacher after graduating.

The University of Greenwich is based in the wonderful buildings at the Old Royal Naval College, part of the World Heritage Site in Greenwich, London.  It is close to the city and has developed excellent contacts with many employers based in institutions such as Macquarie Investment bank, EY and the Civil Service and also some employers a little further afield such as GlaxoSmithKline and the National Audit Office.

Employment focussedGreenwich university

Mathematics at Greenwich is described as practical.  This means that it is geared more towards today’s job market with students’ employability being a priority.  The Department also has an active research environment with graduates progressing to MSc and PhD programmes at a wide variety of institutions including, in recent years, Berkeley and Cambridge.  Graduates going into careers straight after their degree often gain employment in data analytics, operational research and teaching and, after an appropriate MSc, in medical statistics and investment banking.

The Department offers a wide variety of co-curricular activities such as a weekly drop-in session called the Maths Arcade.  This is an optional session where students can meet with staff to get extra help or develop their mathematical and strategic thinking skills, pitting their wits against staff on various games and puzzles. More details about this can be found on the IMA website.

The Department is proud of its consistently high scores for student satisfaction in the National Student Survey.  For several years it has been rated the top University in London for student satisfaction in mathematics by the Complete University Guide.
