In a way, the decisions you need to make on institution and course are not independent—you need to find an appropriate course at a University you think would suit you. For this reason, you will need to keep both of these in mind at the same time. Also, be sure not to under-estimate how long this whole process can take. You should be at least thinking about courses and universities the year before you apply. This is a very important decision and you shouldn't leave it to the last minute and rush a choice you later come to regret.

Open days

Open days are about the only chance you'll get to talk to current students and ask all those nagging questions that aren't dealt with in the prospectus or university website. Chatting to people there will also help you gather accurate information about what the place is really like—the official literature (such as the prospectus and website) will obviously be putting a rose-tint on everything.

The National Council for Work Experience
Some universities enable students to do work placements during their degree to gain relevant experience and make up their minds on what kind of career they would like. Find a course

You'll probably have a much better idea of which course you want to take than which university you want to go to. This gives you a good place to start: write a list of the universities that offer your course, or ones similar to it in case you have a slight change of mind later on.
