“Without mathematics, there’s nothing you can do. Everything around you is mathematics. Everything around you is numbers.”

Shakuntala Devi – Indian Mathematician

Mathematics is everywhere – but sometimes it is hidden from view and people don’t realise how important it is. In our new competition we want you to make a poster to show people some of the hidden maths in our world.

Pick one area where maths is important and make a poster revealing the hidden maths. Here are some ideas to get you started. Remember – you can choose a different topic – choosing a unique topic could even make your poster stand out more to the judges!

Show how Hidden Maths is used in…
Climate change
Earthquake resistant buildings
Tsunami warnings
Archaeology
Medicine
Transport
Crime Detection
Environment
Health & Society
Business & Money
Entertainment
Science & Engineering
Sport
….etc

We want your posters to be eye-catching, informative and to focus on one area, rather than listing many different areas.

Poster Guidance

To get you started please take a look at this PowerPoint to give you an idea of the things you could include.

Poster instructions/criteria:

  • Your poster should focus on how Hidden Maths is used in one area
  • It sounds obvious, but your poster should be a poster – i.e. it doesn’t need to contain loads of words, it needs to be visually eye-catching and should give a strong message.
  • You can draw your poster by hand, use a computer, or a mixture of both.

For online entries – your poster must be in PDF format

For paper entries

  • Your poster must be A4 size only
  • Please clearly mark your name, year, and school on the back of your poster
  • Please do not attach anything to your poster, for example, beads, sequins, or ‘open the flap’ features (like this example)

There will be three categories for judging:
