As an 18 year old I was lucky enough to gain full time employment as a professional rugby league player, and so didn’t have to search for a job through the normal apprenticeship/YTS route. As sporting careers do not last long though, it was important for me to utilise the free time available to study and develop another career once my present one finishes. For this reason I chose to study Mathematics at Bolton University on a part-time basis and successfully graduated with first class honours in summer 2004. Although the main reason I chose to study maths was because I enjoyed the subject, it was also because I knew not many other people like or are good at maths and so gaining a BSc in this well respected subject would give me an advantage for my future career. I have decided to go into teaching mathematics at school when I finish playing rugby.
