2013 has been designated as a special year for the Mathematics of Planet Earth. You can join in by designing a poster that illustrates the maths content related to one of the following categories:-

  • A planet to discover: oceans; meteorology and climate, mantle processes (the processes which form the Earth’s crust), natural resources, solar systems.
  • A planet supporting life: ecology (how communities of organisms live together), biodiversity (the HUGE variety of other animals and plants on our planet, together with the places where found), evolution (whow living things change to adapt to new environments).
  • Poster Competition - Planet at risk 2012/2013A planet organised by humans: political, economic, social and financial systems; organisation of transport and communications networks; management of resources; energy.
  • A planet at risk: climate change, sustainable development (development that meets the needs of today without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs), epidemics (a widespread outbreak of an infectious disease); invasive species (organisms that are intentionally or accidentally introduced to areas where they are not native, and where they successfully invade and disturb natural ecosystems), natural disasters (natural events with catastrophic consequences for living things in the vicinity e.g. floods).

We want you to pick a subject from one of the above categories and design an A4 poster about them. Do a little digging and find out the things they don’t teach in your maths lessons. The best posters from students aged 11-13, 14-16 and 17-19 will win an android tablet, and we’ll also put your posters on the Maths Careers website for everyone to see! There’ll also be five certificates for each age group for those posters that don’t win but which really impress the judges. These will be put on the Maths Careers website as well!
