Ross Brewer, British champion artistic gymnastics

Job Title: British champion artistic gymnastics

I am the current British Champion for men’s artistic gymnastics. This is the third year in a row that I have won the title. I have also won two gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in the team competition, the first in Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and the second in Manchester in 2002. I train twice a day, for 1 hour in the morning and 4 hours in the evening, 5 days a week. Training involves conditioning in the first session (strength and flexibility work) and elements/routines in the second session.

I studied Maths at the University of Surrey and received a first class degree. I have always enjoyed maths, my earliest memories of it are when my Granddad used to give me logic puzzles to do on holiday. I always liked the fact that the answer is right or wrong with no grey areas, and you can often check your solutions once you have found them.

As well as doing gymnastics I work part-time as a bookkeeper for a firm of accountants to earn a living and pay for my training. I enjoy this job as well as I find it interesting seeing how the company runs and it is satisfying knowing that the books balance at the end of each month.

I am going to the Commonwealth Games in March this year and hope to go to the next Olympics in Beijing 2008.
