Why did you choose this career?
Having always enjoyed mathematics and physics, I was interested in a science based career. Research and engineering were two possible options and the opportunity to combine these in a topic that fits in directly with my maths and physics background was perfect.
Which qualification(s) did you do?
A levels in Maths, Physics & Chemistry. BSc Joint Hons. in Mathematics & Physics.
How do you use maths in your job?
Constructing mathematical models of aircraft structures and fuel systems, solving equations relating to electrostatic hazards in aircraft.
What’s the best thing about the job?
The fact that I’m learning something new and interesting every day.
What’s the worst thing about the job?
Having only recently started, I am currently enjoying all aspects of the job!
Is there any advice that you would give?
Studying maths at a higher level does not mean you have to become a maths teacher or an accountant – there are many other exciting opportunities out there and studying maths can keep these options open to you.
What do you want to do in the future?
As I am in the first stages of my career, I am not sure what the future holds. At the moment I am enjoying what I am doing and am fully aware that I wouldn’t be able to do this without a maths and physics background.
