The Institute of Mathematics and its Applications is the professional and learned society for qualified and practising mathematicians. Founded in 1964 the Institute has 5,000 members from all parts of the UK and overseas who work in industry, commerce, the public sector and education. It is a charity which promotes and supports understanding, teaching, research and applications of mathematics. It was incorporated by Royal Charter in 1990.

The IMA is a leading voice for mathematics and represents mathematics and mathematicians to a wide range of organisations. It awards grants, organises conferences, publishes journals, contributes to public debates and has the right to award the Chartered Mathematician, Chartered Scientist and Chartered Mathematics Teacher designations.
