The Maths Careers website is a great way to find out how equations you learn in your maths lessons at school can apply to the real world. Did you know that ratios can help you bake a cake? Or that area and volume help us hunt for dinosaurs? What about how Newton’s laws of motion keep roller coasters on track? These are just a few of the places maths can take you – but what about the mathematicians who help you get there?
Believe it or not, maths hasn’t been around forever, and all the ideas you learn at school had to be dreamt up by a mathematician from the past. We want you to pick one of these historical mathematicians and design an A4 poster about them. Do a little digging and find out the things they don’t teach in your maths lessons – who were these mathematicians? What were their lives like? How did they come up with their great mathematical ideas? The best three posters from readers aged 11-14, 14-16 and 16-19 will win an iPod shuffle and a £25 iTunes voucher, and we’ll also put your posters on the Maths Careers website for everyone to see!
